Founded by entrepreneur and inventor Dean Kamen in 1989, FIRST is a non-profit organization that inspires students to pursue interests in the areas of science, mathematics and technology while encouraging students to develop knowledge and skills that could be applied to real-world situations. [1]
In order to accomplish these tasks, students partner with engineers and technologists that are skilled in their fields to create innovative solutions to problems, as well as learn important life skills, such as self-confidence, good communication, and leadership. By taking these measures, Kamen hopes "to transform our culture by creating a world where science and technology are celebrated and where young people dream of becoming science and technology leaders."
